The idea
Hedonic editing suggests separating gains, combining losses, pairing a small loss with a larger gain, and presenting a small gain separately from an unavoidable large loss. Treat these as presentation hypotheses. The underlying benefits and restrictions must remain clear, and an app-restricted allowance is not equivalent to unrestricted data.
Use it thoughtfully
- List pack benefits as separate items.
- Show one all-in price, not a base plus fees.
- Pair any price rise with a clearly bigger benefit.
An example
ILLUSTRATIVE TEST HYPOTHESIS: A team tests whether listing each benefit separately improves understanding of the same offer. If it compares unrestricted data with social-only data, it also measures the effect of that product restriction.
A question to try
Does your best-selling pack present its benefits separately and its cost as one number?
A useful framework is a starting point, not a guarantee. Effects vary with the audience, product and situation. Use truthful evidence, respect customer choice, and test the result.
